Denver Urban Family Session

I  love an adventurous family! This family was not persuaded from doing their pictures by the snow that was coming down on the date that we had chosen in December. We embraced it and even their little guy had a great time wandering around the city. The  lights all around gave us some awesome looking backdrops and added to the holiday feel of our shoot. Part way through we stopped at a cute little coffee shop to warm up with some hot chocolate and then continued on to find some more awesome locations around downtown.

Southern California Wedding

I don’t photograph many weddings but when I do it is for someone special. This wedding was for my cousin Katie. She flew me out to California so that I could document her special day.

My newborn cousin

I recently had a very crazy weekend where I was flown out to California for 24 hours and in that time I photographed a wedding,  which will be in the next blog post to come, and this little guy’s  newborn session. I had a really great time especially since both of these sessions were for my family that I don’t get to see very often.  This is Jayce, my second cousin, and he is a little older than I usually photograph newborns at. He was a month old but he still did a great job. The only props I had with me are what I could cram into a suitcase so I tried to keep it simple. My aunt laughed at me when she felt how heavy my suitcase was for only being gone from home for one day. How many people carry a rug and a basket around in their luggage? Oh just me? That’s ok it was totally worth it. This little man’s dad is a marine and since he is stationed somewhere far away he still has not had the pleasure of meeting his new little boy in person. I am happy that I got to create some beautiful portraits of his son at this early stage in his life since I am sure he will look very different in just the little time that passes until his dad gets to hold him in his arms for the very first time.

Littleton high school senior

Not everybody likes getting their pictures taken. I understand that.  It can feel awkward and most people aren’t sure how to pose themselves or know what angles  make them look best. That is where I come in. I try to make my clients feel as comfortable as I can, like we are just two friends hanging out and having fun. Cheyanne told me before we started her senior session that she wasn’t really into this shoot and doesn’t really let anyone take her picture but she was doing it for her mom. But by the end of the session she told me that she had a great time and that she really loves her final images. Her mind was changed and that makes me feel like I was successful. Sure I want my clients to have awesome pictures but I also want them to have a great experience. I want them to look back at their photos and remember all of the laughter and the great conversations we had while creating them. I love when my clients become my friends.

Cheyanne is a senior at Littleton High School and after she graduates will be going to school for psychology so that she can eventually work with autistic children. Not only is she beautiful but she has an amazing heart. Once I got her comfortable she was up for anything and didn’t mind getting a little wet and playing in the stream with me.

Oh, what fun to have a boy!

How fun it must be to have fireworks and barbecues every year on your birthday! This sweet little babe was born on the birthday of our country so the theme for our session was a no brainer, stars and stripes and red, white and blue. He was a chunky one born over 9 pounds. He was such a good baby and slept perfectly through most of our session. I am so lucky that I get to spend a few hours cuddling someone so cute and sweet and get to preserve this moment in time for his parents since he will look different even by tomorrow.

Littleton College Graduate

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined!-Thoreau

Graduating from college is a great accomplishment. You are finally out of school and on to start the rest of your life.

Jennifer is about to graduate from college and wanted to commemorate her accomplishment with a portrait session. We had to reschedule and move our session time around a bit because of the crazy Colorado weather and the many thunder storms we have been having lately.

I used to work with her mom so it was an honor to final meet the daughter that I had heard so much about. Jenn is now working with kids who have autism which I immediately connected with because my sister used to do that.

We shot our session at Flyin’ B park in Highlands ranch. It a favorite with local photographers around here and we had to dodge three or four other sessions going on that day. For good reason though because there are so many different looks you can get in one little park.

Littleton Senior Portraits

Every year I donate a photo session to my children’s school for their fundraising auction. It is always a fun surprise when I find out what kind of shoot I will be doing. This year my oldest son’s teacher from first grade won the session. She decided to use it for her son’s senior portraits and I was so excited to find out that he is a fencer. I love incorporating hobbies and passions into my senior shoots. It makes them that much more fun and personal.

IMG_6188-copy

For this shoot we met up at Denver’s Union Station and found this cool textured wall around the back. My youngest son Deegan now wants to try fencing after seeing these pictures.

IMG_6191-copy

We spent the shoot wandering around. There are so many cool textures and fun backgrounds downtown. I love the nature shoots but it is always great to change it up with an urban background.

When chatting with his mom I learned that he goes to an open school. It is a small school that is an alternative to  conventional schooling. They find the student’s interests and tailor their curriculum to help them reach the reality of having a successful career doing what they love. The students go on several trips to other countries learning first hand about real life. I have to say I am very intrigued with the idea of this school and I am researching it for a possible future school for my children.  Union station makes a great background for this shoot too because it is a place for travel and this senior has already done so much traveling with his school.

Great job !

To say I miss you is an understatement

There are some people in your life that you expect to always be there. For me it was my sister Stephanie. She was always there when we were growing up and she was always there as we grew into adults. But suddenly she is not here anymore and my heart is having a really hard time accepting it.

Stephanie and I are two years apart. Growing up people always stopped us in the grocery stores and asked my mom if we were twins. Maybe we were twin souls just born at different times. We have always been very alike. We both loved horses, the same music, hanging out with the same friends, sharing clothes. We both decided to become vegetarian when we were teenagers. I never minded her following me around like most younger siblings do. I always wanted my children to be close in age so that they could have the relationship Stephanie and I had. She was my person. My best friend. The one I went to when I was sad and needed to vent or when I was happy and I knew she would share in my joy. She knew me inside and out. I am lucky that my sister and I had such a great relationship. I have no regrets about fights we had or the amount of time in between conversations with her. The closeness of our relationship does make losing her so so painful but I love and hold onto what we had.

March 21st 2015 will always be known to me as the day my life forever changed. My father called me at 11 o clock that night which I thought was strange but I didn’t answer the call because I was at my sister in laws house celebrating her birthday. Then he sent a text message to call him back no matter what time. I knew it was bad. We then grabbed our stuff and headed home. When I finally called him back he asked if Ricky, my wonderful husband, was there with me and I prepared myself for the bad news. But no matter how much you prepare, those words saying your sister has died, cuts you like the sharpest knife right through the heart. I did not want to believe it. That’s the first step of grief, instant denial.  It can’t be her. I just saw her and talked to her a couple of hours ago. I didn’t and still don’t want to believe it. The grief and the pain is still very fresh. I see the world differently now. It has gotten a little dimmer. Trivial things seem to matter less. I go throughout my days surrounded by a thick fog, randomly crying, wondering why it had to be her. One day I will be ok. I have to. I have my own life to live and kids to be strong for but it is going to take some time.

Stephanie was out trying to enjoy a beautiful spring day with her new friend Levi. They were out for a motorcycle ride through the beautiful mountains of Colorado. One moment of distraction from a driver going in the opposite direction forever ended their stories, their light, their right to live and love and experience the future. Both of them just beginning a path to greatness. Here is the news article on the crash http://www.9news.com/story/news/traffic/2015/03/21/shaffers-crossing-crash-285/25160937/

Steph was one test away from joining the LAPD. She had been working with children with autism but was ready to do something new. She was a month or two from moving back to sunny California where she realized she was happiest. She had been living with me for the last year and a half while she figured out where she wanted to go in life. She loved to dance.  She loved shoes. She loved her family. She loved animals. She loved Muay Thai. She trained 6 days a week and did yoga on the 7th day and that is only because they didn’t offer a Muay Thai class that day. She was probably the healthiest person I know. She was always on the go and out with friends. She wasn’t one to just sit at home. She liked to experience as much life as she could. And she had so many friends. Everyone that met her instantly loved her. She used to complain to me that she had no friends and I would tell her to stop being ridiculous but I hope she sees now all of the people that she touched in life. People get busy doing their own things but it doesn’t mean they weren’t her friends and didn’t care about her. Steph was looking for love. She wanted that person to spend her forever with that she could have children with. I feel robbed of the nieces or nephews I could have had. She would have had beautiful children. She was an awesome auntie to my kids. She was the stand in for my husband when my youngest Deegan was born while my husband was out of state working. As soon as I called her to tell her I was in labor she jumped in her car and drove 6 hours to be there with me. She got to cut his cord and give him his first bath. She had the best smile, beautiful eyes and, loving heart. There are so many more things I could say about her.

Here is a video from her instagram of her sparring. I love watching it just to see her moving again. She is the without the head gear.

This is the video we had made for her memorials. We had two of them, one in Colorado and one in California. It has a lot of pictures from her life. I would have loved to have added more but this video is already pretty long.

Levi was just starting his own business in graphic design. He was a wonderful artist and had done tattoos in the past. He was an avid outdoors man who loved hunting, fishing, skiing, snowboarding, rafting, hiking and riding his motorcycle. He cared so much about other people and put together a fundraiser for his brother who was injured in a car accident. He won first place at the Denver county fair for his epic beard. I never got to meet Levi but I think I would have really liked him. He left behind two beautiful children who my heart truly breaks for.

Levi

Here is a link to a funny video that he made that my sister had shown me the morning of their accident.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQYsvvlZJvU

Steph and Levi were only in the beginning of their 30’s with what was supposed to be many more years on this earth. I looked forward to growing old with my sister. I could imagine us old and wrinkly sitting on the front porch watching our grand kids playing. Listening to her tell stories about how she kicked butt back in the day. I have many emotions lately and these feeling are all new and confusing and I am told with time things will get better but right now it is so hard to imagine my life without my sister here. It’s like a bad dream I can’t wake up from. I want nothing more than go back to that day and change her plans.

Hug your loved ones and tell them you love them. Make time for them. Be kind to other people for you never know what they are going through. I have had a lot of support through this from my awesome family, friends and even strangers. I am so grateful to everyone who has messaged me, donated to the funeral costs, sent flowers, prayed for us, hugged me and just kept us in their thoughts. I have gained some awesome friends that were my sisters friends and we are helping each other get through this hard, not fair, part of life.

This tragedy just reaffirms my love for photography. I want to use it to cope with my loss. I want to find a project that speaks to my heart that I can throw myself into. I was lucky enough to do a couple of shoots with Steph and I will forever treasure them. She was a big time supporter of my dream and I hope I can make her proud with the things I accomplish with it. I love you so much sister and I will forever miss you!

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. One thing I am happy about is that you have these beautiful photos of her to keep her spirit alive. That is why photographers are so important. December newborn session

A new baby is like the beginning of all things – wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities. -Eda J. Le Shan

Back in December I got the pleasure of meeting and photographing newborn baby Dustin. His parents had tried for a baby for a long time but it just wasn’t happening for them. And so it goes that once they stopped trying they were finally given the little miracle that they were hoping for. Dustin decided he didn’t want to wait to see the world and showed up 3 weeks early but came out healthy and beautiful and is the best sleepy newborn I have shot yet.

I love newborn babies but don’t want to actually have any more of my own so I am always excited when I get to snuggle and love on them while mom gets to sit back and relax and take some time to herself. We all know that doesn’t happen as much as we would like when we have a newborn.

January Letter to my Children

Dear Drayce and Deegan,

I can’t believe it is already 2015. It seems like yesterday I was 9 years old riding my horse around barefoot and without a care in the world. I wish my situation in life allowed me to offer you that same amazing feeling. The feeling of wind in your hair as you race your horses through the fields and the warm snuggle of their muzzle as they nibble on you looking for treats. Nothing compares to the relationship you have with a horse (or mule 🙂 ). Your grandma fortunately still owns some horses and mules so we occasionally get to spend time with them and I can see you love it as much as I did at your age. This past weekend she was in town for The National Western Stock Show to show her mule Sara so we went to see her and you guys just wanted to pet Sara the whole time. I think it is so wonderful that you inherited my love for animals.

Red Rocks Maternity session

When you are pregnant it feels like it lasts a lifetime, in reality it is only a short time in your life.

I met Sheryle and TJ through a fellow photographer from a different state. She really wanted her best friend to have some great portraits to remember her time being pregnant but she lived too far away to photograph them herself. And that is where I come in.

We decided to meet up at the beautiful Red Rocks state park at sunset for their maternity shoot.  Sheryle and TJ are a very sweet couple and I just know they are going to be amazing parents and their little boy will be showered in love.

Aurora is six months old

Six month old babies are my favorite age to photograph. They are usually so happy and smiley and they can’t yet run away. Aurora turned six months old in October so I decided to go with an orange and brown theme for her session. It also went really well with her big beautiful brown eyes. She is such a happy baby and her favorite word while we were shooting was turkey. We would just say turkey and she would get the biggest smile on her face. I guess she was ready for some Thanksgiving turkey :). Sometimes six month old babies can’t quite sit up yet so we made use of a pumpkin as a seat to help her stay upright which was perfect for the season.

One year old Children’s session

This little girl is the daughter I never had. She is actually the daughter of one of my good friends but I get to keep her several days a week so I consider her part mine too. I have photographed her mom’s maternity session, her first hospital pictures, her official newborn session and her at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and now one year old. I have loved watching her grow and getting to snuggle her and I can’t wait  (I take that back there is  no hurry) to watch her grow and blossom into the beautiful person she is going to be. She is such a calm easy kid most of the time. My youngest son Deegan loves to cuddle her and always asks if she is coming over.

For her one year session we drove up to Golden Gate Canyon State park to try to find some colorful trees for a background. Luckily we found a patch of aspens that were still hanging on to their leaves. It was a little bit chilly up there so we wrapped her in a fluffy warm blanket to keep her happy and warm.

October letter to my children

Welcome to the October edition of Letters to my Children. Be sure to check out more letters in my circle by following this link http://www.terricollinsphotography.com/letters-to-our…

Dear  Deegan,

This month , you had an assignment where you brought home “Teddy” the class teddy bear and then you had to write about your weekend with him. We decided to take advantage of the beautiful fall colored trees and did a little photo shoot with him to add to the assignment. I really love the colors we found and I wish the trees would stay that way longer than just a couple of weeks.

In contrast to  your teddy bear hugging photo shoot the other day at dinner you  announced that you didn’t think Santa was real anymore and that you were sure it was  dad. I don’t know if  Drayce still believed or if you guys had discussed it before but it made me sad because you are only six and I figured you still had a few years of believing to go. The positive side to it is I don’t have to be so careful about what I say around you guys because I have definitely slipped up a few times and tried to correct it and hope you didn’t realize.

Aww…what a sad day to discover your child no longer believes Santa is real. My oldest (who is almost 8) told me not long ago that she believes Santa is real because she feels the magic inside her. And she believes that her feeling is real. So as long as she can feel the magic of Christmas in her heart, then Santa is real. Such a grown up approach. But it makes me a little sad know she’s growing up. Also, I love the pictures with the teddy bear. He seems so young and innocent. Such a contrast to the Santa statement. They grow up so fast, don’t they?

Bonnie

I love it, so wonderful to watch my beautiful Grandsons growing up before my eyes

Dear Drayce and Deegan,

School started only a few short weeks ago and you are now 3rd and 1st graders. I miss spending our days together but you have an amazing school and I know they are taking good care of you. Our summer went by too fast and we didn’t get to do all of the fun things I hoped we would do but we will make up for that next summer for sure.

Drayce you have finally decided to cut your hair. You have been growing it out for a long time to be like your Uncle Joel so I was so surprised when from out of the blue you asked to cut it. I have to say that I was happy with that decision. I believe it is your hair and you can do what you want with it but I am glad I don’t have to correct people anymore when they call you a girl plus now it is easier to take care of. Deegan got a trim too and of course we wouldn’t have anyone else but our amazing friend Devyn cut your hair.  www.hairbydevynmccarty.weebly.com . She was more nervous about cutting all your hair off than you were because last time she had trimmed it you were a little upset with her for a few minutes. She cut 8 inches off!

Columbine Senior Portraits~ Michelle

I have been looking forward to this shoot for several years. This is my niece Michelle and she is already a senior at Columbine High School. I met my husband when she was 2 years old and used to babysit her for his sister. It feels like that was only a short time ago but in reality 15 years have gone by. She is now the age I was when I first met her. The dress she is wearing in the first few pictures is actually my prom dress that I wore to prom with her uncle (my now husband) his senior year.

This is her facebook page and I think everyone should like it and then go and get your hair done https://www.facebook.com/HairbyDevynMcCarty . She is who I go to when I need my hair dyed and cut. My other friend Pam was gracious enough to do Michelle’s make up. She is a representative at the Lancome counter at Dillards in the Southwest Plaza and you should go see her after getting your hair done! Michelle loved feeling pampered and looked so beautiful.

Michelle wants to go to school to be a cosmetologist herself so this was also a good experience for her to see what working in that field is like. Maybe someday she will be doing make up for future seniorportrait shoots I do.

I love the combination of her red hair and green dress. She reminds me a little bit of Ariel.

Isn’t she the prettiest senior? I might be biased though.

Senior Portraits in Downtown Littleton

Damian is a senior at Chatfield high school this next year and we had a great time shooting his senior portraits a few weeks ago. We had one little problem though, he broke his arm a few days before we were scheduled to shoot. Ouch! I was worried that we were going to have to postpone or try to hide a cast in his pictures but it turned out that he wasn’t getting his arm in a cast until after our session. We decided to go ahead with our shoot using  the utmost of caution and I am so glad that we did. We met up in downtown Littleton and wandered the streets finding cool colored walls and old barn doors. He was such a trooper and I don’t think you can even tell that his arm was causing him pain.

Damian’s mom won a photo session with me from an auction at my kid’s elementary school that I had donated to. I love being able to help my children’s school while still doing something I love and also giving someone a great deal on a photo session at the same time. I will definitely be donating sessions to future auctions there.

I really love shooting seniors. They are usually up for anything and are easy to pose and Damian was no exception. He said he liked the “looking off into the distance” pose so we were sure to get a few of those and I have to say the pose suits him well.

I hope Damian has a fantastic senior year and goes on to have a successful career in the military which he plans to join after he graduates. Thanks again Damian and Stacy for choosing Jennifer Vinson Photography to shoot your senior portraits!

Very nice Jenny, Great photo shoot!

Stunning children’s portraits

The sky was getting dark as the storm clouds were rolling in.  I was on my way to photograph three beautiful children at Bear creek lake park and I was slightly worried that we would have to reschedule. Before my sessions I always check the weather because here in Colorado it is always changing at the drop of a hat. For our shoot this time it said there was only a 10% chance of rain.  Well the 10% chance was suddenly 100%.  I was hoping that maybe it would just pass us by or hold off until we were done. We got through a majority of our shoot dry but suddenly there was a loud boom and the skies opened up. I took several pictures of the girls dancing in the rain but then it got so heavy that we decided to wait it out in our cars for about half an hour until it lightened up. The kids were such good sports that we picked up right were we left off.

I love photographing children and this was one of my favorite sessions. The kids even said that they had a lot of fun which is one of my main goals when photographing children. I don’t just want amazing photos but I want it to be a memorable experience that they look forward to doing again.

These children are gorgeous and you can tell just how much they love each other.

A Letter to my children

Dear Drayce and Deegan,

Ever since I was a child myself I have always known that I wanted to be a mother. I was the oldest of three girls and  was always a care giver to my younger sisters. I always dreamed of having a blonde haired little boy and to my surprise that is exactly what I got with my first born.

Drayce,

You were a trouble maker since the day you were born. I say that in the most loving way of course. You came out arm first instead of head first and that made getting you out a little more difficult. We were worried you might have broken something coming out like that but it turned out that you were perfect in every way. You were a pretty good baby until you reached the terrible twos and boy were you a feisty one. I am sort of ashamed to admit it but I actually lost you in Walmart once when you ran away from me while I was carrying your newborn brother. Luckily the man who came in to service the water machine found you hiding behind it after we called a code adam and had everyone in the store looking for you. I used to work at Walmart and always wondered how anyone lost their kids in the store. I can now say will never judge them again. You weren’t very happy when your little brother came along. The two of you are almost exactly 2 years apart and you weren’t ready to share your mom with anyone else. Now the two of you are best friends and I only hope your bond grows stronger as you get older. You are 8 years old now and he time has flown by but you are such a amazing little person. You just finished second grade and have been accepted into the gifted and talented program. You have long hair because you want to be like your Uncle Joel. You hate having your picture taken but I manage to get a few in here and there. You love video games, legos, swimming, camping and you really love your dog Louie. You have even said you love him more than your parents but I don’t take offense because I had the same love for my pony Buffy when I was your age. I am so proud of you and love you more than you will know until you have a child of your own.

Deegan,

You are my little momma’s boy, the best Christmas present I have ever received. Your dad couldn’t be there for your birth because he was in another state working and making a home for us to come to after you were born. That’s not to say he didn’t want to be there, he did, instead he was on the phone listening to you make your entrance. We were surrounded by lots of family though and your Auntie Steph was your father’s stand in and got to cut your cord. You were an easy child (thank goodness). You breezed through the two’s, got a little defiant during the three’s but nothing I couldn’t handle. I was an experienced mom now and knew what to do. You have always looked up to Drayce and wanted to be just like him. You even grew your hair out like him until you decided to were tired of being called a girl. You are now 6 years and just graduated from Kindergarten. You lost your 2nd tooth just last night. You are so smart and your kindergarten teacher said she would love to clone you to fill her classroom. You are my little brown haired child that is my little mini me. You love photography almost as much as I do and let me take as many pictures of you as I want (Yes!) and you aren’t so bad yourself with the camera. You have such a kind heart and I know you will grow up to be someone amazing no matter what you decide to do.

Hi Jennifer! Your boys sound like an amazing pair!! And look at Louie with those blue eyes – so beautiful!
PS-Your black and white conversions are fantastic! 🙂

Rebekah Dorn Budziszewski

Jennifer, this is a beautiful letter. Your boys sound so much like my girls! My oldest had a hard time when her sister came, too. She didn’t like sharing her parents! And now they are the best of friends. Thank you for sharing this glimpse into your family.

Bonnie Crouchman

Jennifer you are the most amazing mother . Reading this blog made my heart swell with such pride, and brought tears to my eyes. The love you have for my Grandsons makes me so proud.

Kari Halvorsen-Ganske

Love the inclusion of the birth stories. I may steal that idea 🙂 And, in addition to their names, I love the pictures! The black and whites of your son are gorgeous!

Beth Daum

Awesome pictures of your children. The stories are magical as well…

So beautiful

6 months old-Littleton Children photographer

I have said it before and I will say it again, 6 month olds are my favorite age to photograph! Paizlee is already half way through her first full year of life and she has changed so much since that first newborn session I shot of her. This time I split her session into two parts because she was just not feeling very photogenic the first time around. It is pretty common for children to not want to do a photo shoot when they are supposed to and I totally understand that and I am willing to do what I have to do to get those amazing smiles that parents love. The next time she came to see me we went outside and she was in a much better mood and I caught a lot more of her adorable smile.
